During Women’s History Month, I find myself reflecting on the legacy of Lilian Rice, not only for what she created, but for what she represented.

In the 1920s, at a time when architecture was overwhelmingly male dominated, Lilian Rice was entrusted with shaping an entire master planned community. She became one of the few women in the country to hold that level of responsibility, serving as the lead architect behind Rancho Santa Fe’s original vision. Her work was not just respected, it defined the standard.

Rancho Santa Fe was never accidental. It was conceived with intention, guided by Rice’s disciplined approach to proportion, natural materials, and a deep sensitivity to the land itself.
At the heart of that vision sits The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe, originally La Morada. More than a gathering place, it established an architectural language that is quiet, cohesive, and enduring, shaping everything that followed.

What makes Rancho Santa Fe so distinct today is that her principles were never abandoned. They were protected, upheld, and carried forward for nearly a century.

That continuity safeguards both the character of the community and the long term integrity of its real estate.
And perhaps most remarkably, it all traces back to a woman who was ahead of her time, designing not just homes, but a way of living that still defines the standard today.

Here are a few of my favorite ways to create a meaningful, elevated Galentine’s gathering...many thoughtfully sourced right here in our special community:

Blush, ivory, and soft whites create a palette that feels fresh, feminine, and timeless. Layer delicate textures and sculptural elements to add depth without overwhelming the table, with some curated decor from @floral_palette

2. Introduce a Fun, Participatory Theme
I love a good “Favorite Things” theme: everyone brings and shares something they adore, whether it’s a beauty must-have, a travel essential, or a little indulgence. It instantly creates connection and ensures everyone arrives dressed for the occasion.

3. Layer Thoughtful Details
Designed with help from @amiupyourstyle, the table is layered with intention. @potterybarn tableware, linen napkins, polished flatware, and restrained florals create a setting that feels collected, refined, and quietly luxurious.
